ree

Emerging young R&B vocalist, actress and model Yassie, whose soaring voice and artistic vision has inspired her to start charting with her music, is reaching new heights with her latest music , which include singles ’Prove It’ and her latest single ' Last Call' .

IamDjRo was able to catch up with Yassie and ask a few questions about her music career. Read the exclusive below.

 Tell me in a few words, who you are. How would you describe

yourself in a short story.

I am Yassie , I am from Nashville raised in Atlanta GA . Currently living in Nashville , I am a music lover who has found an outlet through my talents of singing and songwriting.  What’s your stage name and how did you come up with it?

Yassie is my stage name , it comes from my nickname as a child " Yassie Boo "  What got you into music? My late mother who passed away in 2009 , she sang in the choir at our church and when she heard my voice she had me join her .

 What was life like growing up?

Life for me was very difficult , there were good times but very early on I was exposed to abuse both physical and sexual . Most people would say I am being too open by saying this but it's my story and I believe so many can learn and grow from what I have experienced . My mother was in an abusive relationship for 7 years of my childhood , and once she finally left that relationship we began to rebuild our lives . However , shortly afterwards she was diagnosed with cancer and died within a week . Her passing really shook me as a young teen I was just 13 yrs old . Safe to say I had to grow up very early and learn things very quickly . I do not regret my journey as it has made me the woman I am today .

 Who is your inspiration? What keeps you going to get up daily and put effort into your music career?

My mother is my inspiration and my 4 year old son . My mom and I had many conversations about me becoming a star , she always believed in my talent so I push through everyday for her .  What is your creative process like? What is the meaning behind your current single?

I like to tell stories or describe my experiences through my music , when I listen to a track i'll play it several times before writing and the words just begin to flow . The meaning behind my single " Last Call " is you may love someone but sometimes you have to let them go . The metaphor is this is the last conversation with you and your partner aka the "last call " .  What is the name of the current single/ep/album that you are pushing? Do you prefer people to buy it or stream? And why?

My current single is " Last Call " I'd prefer both to be honest , genuine support is what I am hoping to gain . The "why" would be because I feel in some ways real R&B has taken a back seat , but with my music and this track you get that R&B feel/story and I truly believe my music is relatable to everyone .  With the industry changing so much, would you stay indie or sign to a label? Why and why not?

I would only join a label if I could own my masters and maintain my creative processes . Otherwise , I would stay indie music is not just a job for me or a quick check . I live and breathe music , music is who I am so I won't settle just for a record deal .  Do you feel like the music industry has went down since the pandemic? Why or why not? Where you affected by the pandemic with music or everyday life? I don't feel it has " went down " but I will say the dynamic of how to get your music has changed . Millions of people were forced to be at home , which means they are on their phones ( social media , youtube , worldstar , TikTok etc .. ) this gave artist a chance to be seen because everyone was home anyway . I was affected by it as far as several canceled showcases etc..

 If you were give a chance to sit down and have a business dinner with a celebrity who would it be and why?

Drake, he is an icon and I feel I could learn a lot from him . He literally built himself from the ground up , I admire not only his music but his work ethic .

 How do you balance everyday life tied into your music career?

I just make time for everything , I usually try to plan things in advance . I do have a publicist and media team who has helped out tremendously with organizing all of my business ventures involving my music .

 Tell me about your most memorable moment in your career?

Performing at a festival here in Nashville , there was a woman in the crowd who came to me after my show to tell me that she had just lost her mother and she felt as though my song was for her . We cried and it was just such a beautiful but powerful moment , I make music about what I have been through but also to help heal others who may have gone through similar things.  What style of music do you prefer to make? Would you ever try a different lane?

R&B , Trapsoul , NeoSoul . Yes , I have actually been writing pop tracks here lately .  Do you have a celebrity crush?

I'd say no to this one lol , I look up to a lot of artist but a crush no .

 Is there anyone who you would collab with right now?

Yes . Tink , Summer Walker , Ari Lennox , Drake , TheWeekend and 6lack . To name a few .  Who is the producer and engineer behind your music? I have a few producers , but my main producer is Vonex . I also work with OddThomas , and Adam Leeds .

 What are you currently working on and what is next for you?

I am working on more singles , music video dropping soon for "Last Call" , more shows and content .  When it comes to fashion, whats your dressing style ? I'd describe my style as classy/sexy/trendy but chic.

 What is your creative process like and who inspired you to make music?

My mother , and I like to really feel the music and let the words flow from the beat . I'll listen 30-50 times before I write to a beat , the words come from experiences and just the vibe the beat brings .

 If you could open up for one celebrity who would it be and why?

Summer Walker , we make very similar music I feel her fans would appreciate my music , as well as my voice .

 Any funny stories or an embarrassing moments you want to share with our readers?

I don't really have any embarrassing or funny stories off hand .  What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career?

I would be a psychologist or therapist .  What is one message you would give to your fans? Live your life , love yourself , and no matter what don't ever give up .
