IamDjRo got the inside exclusive on who Papi Grasa is and what really got him into music. Check out the conversation below.
Tell me in a few words, who you are. How would you describe
yourself in a short story.
I am Papi Grasa. I’m from Rocky Mount, NC and I currently live in
Greensboro, NC. I’m a laid back, cool calm and collective dude.
I’m very chill but also very observant and family oriented.
What’s your stage name and how did you come up with it?
My stage name is “papi grasa” it’s fat daddy in Spanish. I was big
boy most of my life lol.
What got you into music?
“Mixtape Wayne” and my bros KelseyKobeBryant, Donnie Visa
Killa Daz and Doe boi(r.I.p).
What was life like growing up?
To me it was cool and for us it’s was normal but it was like any
typical hood. We had to grow up fast, lost a lot of bros on the way
but I’m blessed to still be here.
Who is your inspiration? What keeps you going to get up daily
and put effort into your music career?
My family, especially my
kids my ol lady, my bros and the fact that I’m still here on earth
inspires me.
What is your creative process like? What is the meaning behind
your current single?
To me it’s pretty simple. I’ll usually have a
concept in my head on what I want to rap about, then I’ll just listen
to beats until I find one that I feel. My current single “Buddy Love”
is a play off of “The Nutty Professor” I used to be big like Sherman
But since I found that blue potion and dropped all that weight…. “
they don’t really like me they just want Buddy Love lol.
What is the name of the current single/ep/album that you
are pushing? Do you prefer people to buy it or stream? And
why?
“Buddy Love” and I would prefer people to stream it. Just really
want to grow my following. The money will come.
With the industry changing so much, would you stay indie or
sign to a label? Why and why not? It really depends on the deal
if I sign to a label but for the most part I’d rather be
independent. I like to have creative control and be able to
release music as I please.
Do you feel like the music industry has went down since the
pandemic? Why or why not? Where you affected by the
pandemic with music or everyday life?
No not really. And no I wasn’t.
If you were give a chance to sit down and have a business
dinner with a celebrity who would it be and why?
Probably Rick Ross, because he went from just a rap artist to a businessman. Took his
money from music and invested well to create generational
wealth.
How do you balance everyday life tied into your music career?
I put it in my music, it’s my escape.
Tell me about your most memorable moment in your career?
Well at this current state I’m only about 6 weeks into my
professional career but, so far the most memorable moment has
been when my favorite producer ever “Zaytoven” reached out to
me and has been keeping up with me since.
What style of music do you prefer to make? Would you
ever try a different lane?
More of a laid back style of rap usually
on hard trap beats and I’m in my own lane but of course I
would.
Do you have a celebrity crush?
No lol
Is there anyone who you would collab with right now?
Gucci Mane, Ella Mai.
Who is the producer and engineer behind your music?
Various producers but I’m rocking with my bro Dx2c.
What are you currently working on and what is next for you?
Well I just currently finished up my mixtape-Forever Playa “The
story of Buddy Love” now I’m just trying to find the perfect release
date.
When it comes to fashion, whats your dressing style ?
Laid back, I like to be comfortable but I do get fly my style is just
authentic to who I am.
What is your creative process like and who inspired you to
make music?
It’s pretty simple, I just put my life on these
beats “Mixtape Wayne” and my bros KelseyKobeBryant,
Donnie Visa Killa Daz and Doe boi(r.I.p).
If you could open up for one celebrity who would it be and why?
Gucci Mane or Young Dolph(r.i.p). Gucci Mane’s my favorite rapper
and I can just relate to their music.
What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music
career?
Same thing I’m doing now just without the music. Working and
raising my kids.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Don’t worry about the things you can’t control, we’re here for a
good time not a long time go live your life because can’t no one
else live it.
